Last week I decided to take a three day road trip across Highway 20 in norther Washington state in the US. I like taking road trips in the US because the gas and booze are significantly cheaper, and road trips call for both. Since there was a long weekend in Canada, it also meant that there should be less travelers state-side. So I decided to take a drive across Highway 20 through the North Cascade mountain range. Part of that highway is closed in the winter, and in the past I had only been as far as the Diablo Lake lookout, which you can see in the short video below (3 min 30 sec), including the Gorge Creek Lookout, so this was the perfect opportunity to drive all the way through the North Cascades.
My first stop, after stopping for gas and a huge $4 burrito from a Mexican taco truck in Burlington, was in Marblemount. Take a look at the short video (1 min 22 sec) below.
As I was leaving Marblemount it started to rain a bit, and the further east I traveled the more it rained. I felt a bit disappointed because I knew that where I was heading was considered to be a rain-shadow. However, when I finally arrived in the area where I wanted to camp, it really started to pour, with thunder and lightning to boot. I didn’t film at that time because, well, there was nothing to film except darkness and rain. But when I woke up the next morning it was beautiful. Take a look at the short video (2 min 56 sec) below for the sights and sounds of my camp area.
The peace and quiet was great where I was camping. I explored the area, which had a couple of empty houses. They didn’t look abandoned, just not occupied. I spotted some wildlife, which included various birds, as well as a herd of deer that passed by my camp both mornings I was there. I thought of heading to town on one of the days, but decided to leave that till the morning I was leaving, which was a Monday. Winthrop WA is a tiny town, but it looks pretty cool nevertheless, especially on a Monday morning with minimal tourists. Take a look at the short video below (1 min 35 sec), and you’ll feel like you’ve seen the whole town.
Of course I couldn’t go through a whole trip without taking photos, so I’ve pulled out some of the better ones for you to see, to get a better feeling for the area in which I traveled. Hope you enjoy both the videos and the photos below.
