From Idaho to Nevada and Things in Between

April 13, 2010

After spending the first night of my road trip to Las Vegas somewhere in the fields of northeast Oregon I continued to Twin Falls, Idaho, where I stopped to watch some base jumpers parachuting off a bridge into the Snake River Canyon (see the previous post’s video here Bart Visits the Snake River Canyon in Idaho on the way to Vegas). It was late evening as I was leaving Twin Falls, so I decided to settle down for my second night by setting up camp on a ranch field by a dirt road just east of Rogerson, Idaho, about 18 miles (29km) north of the Idaho/Nevada border on highway 93.

As during the previous evening, it was dark when I was putting up my tent so I didn’t really see what was in the distance. For that same reason I didn’t film – it was just too dark. So I filmed my camp on the second morning of my trip, when there was enough light. Take a look at the short video below to see my “Rogerson Camp”, as well as some magnificent sights during my day’s drive from Rogerson, ID to Caliente, Nevada, a total of about 570km. At the end of my third day on the road I made camp near Caliente that evening, but again, it was dark so I filmed on the morning after – material for the next post and video.

When I was driving south on highway 93 most of the campers, RVs and other cars heading north had British Columbia (Canada) license plates. I thought that this highway should be called BC highway, but I couldn’t figure out why there were so many Canadians heading north. Were they all returning from Las Vegas? Maybe they were ‘snowbirds’. I don’t know, but all the drivers looked to be in retirement age – well, except me, but I was heading south.
